I was recently in Seattle with my family and we took our baby to the waterfront. There’s a fantastic place called Ivar’s, known for its delicious clam chowder, its beautiful location on the water and the seagulls who call it home.
We thought our daughter would enjoy checking out the birds – and the fact they eat directly out of your hand!

When we first got there, the seagulls were nowhere to be found. I assured my husband it wouldn’t take long – just get some extra French fries and wait a minute. There was one seagull on the roof of the outdoor patio, and I threw a small morsel his way. He ate it, then, called out to his other seagull friends, who promptly showed up for a snack.
There’s a sign out front encouraging the feeding frenzy.. saying in part, “Don’t worry about overfeeding the birds. Seagulls are dainty eaters.” Dainty, perhaps, but certainly not shy.
